I am so happy to share my interview with Marie with you because it is truly a lesson in self confidence–delivered by a spunky woman who oozes style. Regardless of your dress size, I guarantee that you will come away from this interview feeling happy and proud to be a woman. You might also get really excited about fashion and experience the sudden urge to go SHOPPING!
What is the best thing about running a plus size shop and blog?
I am quite a nerd! I love finding and unearthing new indie plus size designers who fashion a refreshing perspective on fashion! With each designer, collection, and jewel I find, I feel it brings together those who never thought or would ever put the words plus size and fashion together! In essence, if I can help one woman find her confidence, define her style, or step outside of her “box,” I feel my job is done! That is rewarding.
Are there any plus size celebrities, models or other women that inspire you?
Oh my! There are so many! Let’s see, Queen Latifah–hands down! Every time she hits the red carpet or the screen, she brings it! Beth Ditto’s confidence and style wherewithal are fierce! Models Mia Amber, Fluvia, Tara Lynn, Anansa Simms make me gasp with glee when I see them in editorials! The pioneers of the plus community also inspire me to keep charging ahead! Gwen DeVoe, Madeline Figueroa, Sharon Quinn, Catherine Schuller, Gigi Biggins, Rhonda Wilkins, and Marianne Kirby–they motivate me in different ways! There are so many more women within the community who are blazing paths that I am in awe of!
How do you embrace yourself and your body as-is in a world that is still quite skinny-obsessed?
I was fortunate growing up. As a military brat, I grew up seeing beauty in a variety of shapes, shades, and sizes! My nanna (grandmother whom I am very close with) is a full figured woman and while I was always “healthy,” my size was never a focus or a definition of who I was. As a child and through college, I was a cheerleader–the thickest one! I guess I was so used to being the big girl, that I never really let it bother me…too much. Thanks to my mother (who spent 23 years in the Navy), I was raised with the gusto to “never let anyone tell me no!”
I also find myself motivated by societal pressures and “rules” to share and show others that they CAN be fabulous and: Curvy. Confident. Chic!
Do you think that curves are more accepted than they were a few years ago? Do you believe that the fashion industry will really follow through with its push to present a more diverse image of beauty?
Accepted? It depends on who you ask (lol)! In the US, I find that there is still a fascination and inner battle with the matriarchs of fashion. While they admit the beauty some plus models possess, it is almost at their definition or control. However, I find there are a significant amount of change agents who are leading this push worldwide for change, and while it will not happen overnight, there IS change afoot!
Looking back over the past ten years, YES you find more acceptance, challenges to the status quo and celebration of a woman’s body. In addition, body image advocates like Jessica Weiner, Revolution of Real Women, Ben Barry and others lead the way!
Can you describe your favorite outfit and share why it makes you feel beautiful?
I do not have one favorite, I have a few, mostly dresses. However, what is consistent with these is the ease of style and fit. I feel comfortable, it fits well, I look good, and I do not need to fuss–all of which make me feel beautiful.
Are there plus size brands you adore?
Girl! That is like asking you to choose a favorite child (lol)! I would have to say Elie Tahari, Jibri, ASOS Curves, Simply Be, Anna Scholz, SVOBODA, and so many more!!!
Could you share a few wardrobe and shopping tips for plus size women?
I would be honored to! Here are a few that I constantly stress:
- Fashion should be fun, not boring. You should always have your staple items, and YES you should invest in these.
- Do not shop by number, shop by fit! Plus size designers each have different dimensions and fits–know your designer’s design aesthetic to assist with your shopping and fashion ventures.
- Laying the right foundation is key! YES! A Proper bra, shaper, and underwear are key, and can do wonders for your curves!!!
- Do not be afraid to experiment with colors–sticking to what is “right” can stifle your fashion options!
Above all: Never let your curves define your style, but let your style define your curves!
